The Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden in Almaty arranges tours around its greenhouse. It has over 900 species of tropical and subtropical plants, some of which appeared on Earth as far back as 270 million years ago. The 45 minute long tour costs 100 tenge for adults and 50 tenge for kids in groups of 10 -15 people, or about 1,000 - 1,500 tenge for a private tour. Surprisingly, visitors are not allowed to see the rest of the Botanical Garden, which occupies a huge area and is now largely neglected. Actually, local fans of jogging (including the author) climb over the Garden's fence early in the morning or in the dark and secretly enjoy this quiet and still charming place. To make an appointment, call the Garden's administration at least one day prior to the date of visit at 47-66-92. The main entrance to the Garden is on 36¤ Timiryazeva at Baizakov. The fence can be climbed from Timiryazeva, Atakent, KazGU (Kazakh State University) and Al-Farabi. The Botanical Garden also runs a plant shop where you can buy exotic and regular plants at good prices. The shop is open daily from 10:00 - 19:00 (until 18:00 on Sat and Sun).
