Abylkhan Kasteyev

People's Artist of Kazakhstan, winner of the Ch.Valikhanov Kazakh SSR State Prize, was born on January 1,1904 in the settlement of Chizhin (Panfilov district, Taldy-Korgan region). Studied at N.G.Khludov's studio in Almaty.One of the founders of painting art in Kazakhstan. Died on November 2,1973. The name of A.Kasteyev is assigned to the largest in the Republic State museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Kazakhstan.The building that houses a gallery of the famous printer has a long history. Previously, it served as a military commissariat, offices for the Communist Party committee and a House of Pioneers.In 1936 200 works of painting and graphic arts from the reserves of the Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum and the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts were presented to the State Museum of Arts of Kazakhstan, which later was named after Abylkhan Kasteyev.

The vice prime minister of Kazakhstan, Byrganym Aytimova, left the first signature in the visitor’s books for the gallery. She presented a letter of congratulations from the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev to local residents. Famous landscapes such as «View to the mountains», «Shezhin River» and «Winter» were painted in Kasteyev’s native village of Shezhin. More than 200 modern Kazakhstani painters are from the Panfilov region. According to Khamit Faizullin, a member of the Painters’ Union of Kazakhstan, all of them were influenced by Abylkhan Kasteyev’s work.

- Kasteyev became a painter thanks to this nature. He became a painter because of this beautiful place where he was born and lived, said Khamit Faizullin, Abylkhan Kasteyev’s nephew, member of the Painters’ Union of Kazakhstan.

His major works: "The Turksib", "A Hunter with a Golden Eagle", "A Toy in a Collective farm", a portrait of the folk akyn Jambyl, "A Mountain Landscape", a portrait of Amangeldy Imanov, "An Alpine Skating Rink", "Summer Pasture of Chalkude", "A Hydroelectric Power Station", "Winter stay in the V.Lenin Collective Farm", "The Sokolov-Sarbay Quarry".

The early works of the artist show his careful attitude to the history and traditions of Kazakh people. The painter's poetry, sincerity of feelings and clearness of perception really sinks into the imagination of the audience.

The Kasteyev's creations are diverse works. He creates an original and impressing image in each genre. Those are portraits of the best figures of Kazakh people: Kenesary Kasymov, Abai, Chokan Valikhanov, Zhambyl and others. Art legacy of Kasteyev is a sort of art chronicle of Kazakhstan. His art, charged with love to the native land, is inseparable from Kazakhstan. His progeny - K. Hodzhikov, H. Hodzhikov, S. Kalmykov, E. Sidorkin, S. Mambeyev and Z. Shardenov also made significant contribution to art development.

Samat Nursapayev, a pupil of the famous painter, immortalized the memory of his teacher by engraving Kasteyev’s pictures on stone and trees. There is a park in Kasteyev’s native village where villagers planted 5 thousand trees on 9 hectares.

In 2004 there was celebrations for the artist’s 100-year anniversary will continue in the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana, and in Paris.
