Abai Opera and Ballet Theater: Intersection of Panfilov St and Kabanbay Batyr. Box offices are open 10 AM - 6 PM Tel.: 62-79-34. Performances are held almost daily and start at 6:30 PM. This newly renovated theater has a gorgeous interior and many people dress in evening gowns for their performances. At least jeans should be avoided!
Central Concert Hall (Philharmonics): 35 Kaldayakova at the corner of Tole bi. Offers classical music, both foreign and national. Tel.: 91-75-41.
Conservatory: Intersection of Ablai Khan and Karasay Batyr. Regular concerts of the Conservatory's students and teachers. The Conservatory has a unique collection of records of classical music, local folklore music, jazz, etc. They sell some CD's and have facilities to rerecord their music to CDs. For concerts call 62-95-40 or 62-76-40. To arrange a visit to the media library call in advance at 69-63-63 (Mon-Sat, 9 AM-7 PM). The media library is located on Bogenbai batyr at Abylai khan in the building next to the Conservatory, 3 floor, enter from the end-wall facing the Conservatory.
Kazakh Concert Hall: 83 Abylai Khan and Aiteke bi. Tel 62-01-26. Almost daily local and foreign music and vocal concerts. Box office is open daily 10 AM - 6 PM, lunch break 1 - 2 PM.

Cafe R/FlyInn: Live music is played nightly except Mondays by the rock cover band Big One (don't ask), as well as jazz/blues singer Zhanna Sattarova (Mondays 21.00-01.00) and an Oriental Show (Fridays and Saturdays 23.30-00.15). Jazz Cafe: jazz music is played at the Cafe every Wed, Thu, Fri and Sat from 11 PM till 1-2 AM. The Cafe has its own jazz band "JSC"and often invites other musicians to play, i.e. Zhanna Sattarova. Sunday brunch at Hyatt Regency: a low-key live music provides a pleasant musical ambience while children are entertained by two very patient clowns in a large, adjacent room with toys supplied by management. Brunch costs $25, under age six free, and ages six to twelve half price. The brunch runs from 11:30 to 3:00. Tel: 50-12-34.
Contrabass: tiny but very cozy place, great for taking a girl for a date. Live jazz is played every Wed - Sat from 9 pm - 12 am (the band took a break until March 2003). Good coffee and service but rather expensive. European cuisine. 69 Auezova below Kurmangazy. Tel: 43-03-95. Fax: 42-42-12.

AD LIBITUM Chamber Ensemble: (violin, contrabass, cello). AD LIBITUM ("as a player wishes" from Latin) holds public concerts occasionally and would be happy to play at your parties and corporate presentations (all kinds of music: classics, jazz, American, Spanish music, etc). The Almaty Youth Jazz Band: This gifted band is a member of the International Association of Jazz Educators and has participated in many international festivals.
